The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) demands that all radiation safety officers (RSO) be certified by way of a method or program vetted plus approved by the commission or by a state nuclear regulatory board.
RSO Certificate
RSO certification is valid for 10 years.
The American Board of Radiology (ABR) oversees RSO certification. ABR verifies that applicants have met the prescribed requirements of the NRC and that they have taken rigorous written and oral examinations. The certification, logical for 10 years, is any cooperative effort of the ABR and nine additional American plus North American radiological societies plus associations.
RSO Academic Requirements
RSO must have any BA or master's degree and significant science coursework.
RSO Required Knowledge
RSO candidates must obtain on least five years of professional fitness physics experience.
RSO candidates must have at minimum five years of professional health physics experience together with some minimum of 3 years about applied fitness physics also pass a test that measures the candidate's knowing plus capability by radiation physics, biology, dosage and instruments since properly seeing that defensive steps and the arithmetic of using and measuring radioactivity.
